Financial leadership, on a part-time basis

A fractional CFO is a chief financial officer who works with a business for an agreed portion of time or scope. The role connects financial information to decisions: what you can afford, where cash may tighten, and how a growth plan could affect the business.

The engagement can be recurring or built around a defined project. “Fractional” describes the arrangement; “virtual” describes remote delivery. A virtual finance provider is not necessarily a CFO, so ask about the work and responsibility included.

Responsibilities overlap, especially in a small business. A controller may also forecast, and a CFO may help improve reporting. Titles alone do not define the engagement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes controllers as overseeing financial reporting and, often, accounting and budget functions.

Peak provides CFO advisory; it does not offer bookkeeping or tax preparation. Discuss which records and reporting processes need to be in place before the engagement begins.

When might a fractional CFO help?

  • Sales are growing, but cash feels tight. You need to connect collections, purchasing and expenses to your cash outlook.
  • A major decision is approaching. A hire, new location or acquisition needs a financial model with realistic assumptions.
  • You have reports but no plan. You want a budget, a forecast and a regular conversation about what changed.

An illustrative decision: Before adding a manager, model the full monthly employment cost, expected benefit, hiring date and cash available during the ramp-up. The useful output is a range of outcomes and a decision point—not a promised return.

Choose the scope before the title

Start with the decision you need to make. Ask what deliverables you will receive, how frequently you will meet, what information you need to provide, and which responsibilities stay with your business.

For a focused starting point, Peak’s Business Financial Assessment starts at $500. Ongoing CFO support starts at $2,500/month and includes two CFO sessions. Strategic advisory starts at $5,000/month with four sessions. Projects are quoted separately.

There is no single revenue threshold that makes a fractional CFO the right choice. Complexity, available financial information and the decisions ahead matter. Compare the scope and pricing with the support you actually need.
